Recorded in 1968, Sonny's Dream (Birth Of The New Cool) catches Sonny Criss pushing beyond straight small-group bebop into Horace Tapscott's broader, more orchestrated writing. The result is expansive but never loose: the title track and 'The Black Apostles' carry real weight, while 'Ballad For Samuel' and 'The Golden Pearl' give the album its depth and contrast. It remains one of the boldest records attached to Criss's name.
