Richard Thompson revisits the sharp corners of everyday life on Hippies Thugs & Heroes, combining sly character studies with the bite of his guitar playing. Sorcerer's Apprentice has a ringing folk-rock charge; Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking brings rough-edged humour. These band performances retain the immediacy of a live recording, spread across a gatefold 2xLP set with one single-sided disc.
