Quincy Jones pushed further into late-60s soul-jazz and jazz-funk territory on Walking In Space, a 1969 album that stretches his big-band language into something looser, warmer and more cinematic. The title piece unfolds with real drama, while Killer Joe and Oh Happy Day show how easily Quincy could bridge jazz arrangement, groove and pop-minded colour without sounding slick. It is a key listen from the point where his writing opened up and the textures got deeper.
