Still unlike much else from its era, 'Cure For Pain' finds Morphine building a smoky, low-lit sound out of baritone sax, two-string bass and Mark Sandman's dry, intimate voice. The album moves with a late-night ease, but there is real bite in 'Buena', the title track and 'Mary Won't You Call My Name?'. A defining 90s alternative record that feels lean, strange and completely self-possessed.
