Personal History is one of Mary Chapin Carpenter's most direct recent records - reflective, finely written and carried by arrangements that leave plenty of room for the songs to breathe.
'What Did You Miss', 'The Saving Things' and 'Say It Anyway' underline the album's quiet strength, but the sequencing gives the whole LP its weight.
