Drives catches Lonnie Smith in 1970, pushing soul jazz toward heavier, more open-ended territory. His takes on 'Twenty Five Miles', 'Spinning Wheel' and 'Seven Steps To Heaven' have bite and swing, while side two opens into the exploratory 'Psychedelic Pi' and the sly closer 'Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?'. An essential set if you like groove records with real edge.
