My Favorite Things is one of the hinge-point records in John Coltrane's catalogue. First released in 1961, it introduced his soprano saxophone to album-length effect and turned familiar material into something hypnotic, spacious and new. The title track is the obvious centre of gravity, but the sweep of "Summertime" and the closing lift of "But Not For Me" make this a complete statement rather than a one-song classic.
