The Cat is one of the great crossover-era Jimmy Smith records, pairing his Hammond B-3 with lush Lalo Schifrin arrangements that give the whole thing real cinematic punch. First released in 1964, it is bigger in scale than his small-group Blue Note sides but never loses that unmistakable bite in the playing. Theme From Joy House and the title track hit hard, while Basin Street Blues keeps one foot firmly in the blues tradition.
