First issued as a mail-order, vinyl-only surprise in 1996, Tonics & Twisted Chasers is GBV in pure sketchbook mode: lo-fi, restless and packed with ultra-short songs that still land hooks in a heartbeat. Tobin Sprout's off-kilter backing and Pollard's stream-of-consciousness snap make the whole thing feel playful and slightly feral. Key moments: the melancholic 'Is She Ever?', the jolt of 'Wingtip Repair' and the sideways grin of 'Look, It's Baseball!'.
