This rare Dexter Gordon Trio session strips everything back to the essentials: tenor, bass and drums, with nowhere for that huge tone to hide. Recorded in 1976 and first issued in 1981, Lullaby For A Monster feels intimate but never slight, with Gordon stretching out in a setting that leaves plenty of room for detail.
The title track and "On Green Dolphin Street" show the trio's balance of swing and space, while "Born To Be Blue" brings the set's late-night side into focus. A strong reissue for straight-ahead jazz shelves.
