Cat Power's 1996 Matador album is where the rawness of the early records starts opening into something broader and more deliberate. The mood is still close and unguarded, but the songs stretch further, moving from In This Hole and Good Clean Fun to the pull of Nude As The News and the stark drift of Bathysphere.
It is a pivotal Cat Power record - bruised, direct and full of the tension that would define so much of what came after.
