The self-titled Basso Valdambrini Quintet is a crisp slice of Italian modern jazz, balancing bop fluency with a cool, controlled ensemble sound. Gianni Basso and Oscar Valdambrini lead a set that moves easily between standards and originals, keeping the playing tight, melodic and sharply arranged throughout. It is an elegant late-1950s session with plenty of swing but an equally strong sense of poise.
