The Nervous Kats is a sharp little blast from Northern California teenage band culture, mixing surf, rhythm and blues and rough-edged rock'n'roll with real charm. Nothing hangs around too long, which is exactly why it works so well on vinyl. Surf Express and Cobra open with a grin, but deeper cuts like Traveling Sam and Devil's Run show how much personality the group could squeeze into short forms. A terrific 1965 oddball brought back properly.
