Arab Strap's 1996 debut already had the dry intimacy and night-bus realism that would define them, but it also feels looser and more exposed than what followed. Spare beats, murmured guitars and Aidan Moffat's spoken-sung delivery make these songs sound like private after-hours confessions caught on tape. The First Big Weekend remains the obvious centrepiece, though the whole record is foundational if you care about late-90s UK indie at its most human.
